BHUMI

Bharat, our nation has glorious past. For many centuries, we were a prosperous nation. Our prosperity was rooted in the holistic approach towards nature. “Mata Bhumi Putro Aham Pruthivyah”, In the Bhartiya culture, land is our mother. We, the sons of soil should serve her. In return, she fulfils all basic needs viz. food, clothing and shelter. In general, this has been the vision of the (traditional) Bharat. The (traditional) Bhartiya economy has developed its elements-farming, animal husbandry and trade with this vision. Bharat is characterized by sustainable agriculture. Sustainable agriculture involves qualitative and quantitative management of the natural resources (water, soil, animals, microbes, trees etc.) in such a way that agricultural production and productivity are maintained without harming the resources. However, in the last century, we a nation ignored this holistic approach which resulted in natural sustainable agriculture getting replaced with the modern agriculture typically characterized by exploitation of natural resources. From the holistic point of view, the modern agriculture has offered us a short-term solution. In the longer term, adverse effects of modern agriculture have outweighed its positive effects. Farmers all over India have noticed that continuous application of package of practices recommended in the modern agriculture over the years has given rise to numerous environmental problems like pollution of soil, water and air. At this juncture, it is not sufficient to in general and soil be aware and be informed about the problems of agriculture in particular, we have to be determined to find solutions and bring them into reality. In the present context of climate change and the challenges it has posed to the agriculture sector, it is necessary that the holistic approach of Bhartiya agriculture is readopt and its traditional means revitalized.
