We are a food-sufficient nation at the aggregate level. In 2021-22, we produced 314.51 million tonnes of foodgrains and 341.63 million tonnes of horticultural produce. These figures are the highest ever in the history of Indian agricultural production. The problem today is not of scarcity but that of managing the surplus. Post-harvest handling. storage and distribution of agricultural produce are as important as food production. It is estimated that annual losses in stored produce at farm are 10%. This is due to the lack of adequate storage and processing facilities. In India, the estimated value of the harvest and post- harvest losses of all agricultural produce has been Rs. 926,510 million per year.
